MERAAS 2 DUBAI

A celebration of the city of Dubai, and its transformation over two generations from a primarily nomadic city into a tourist superpower, the new Cirque du Soleil show was intended as a tribute to architecture, both ephemeral and immovable.

We designed a wooden setting with very curved shapes, symbolizing the desert on which Dubai grew. The light tones of the wood modulate into sandy colors in contact with the abundant light, dispensed by a glass enclosure, making the interior and exterior difficult to define, like a mirage. An optical illusion reinforced by a mirrored material placed on the floor and in the exterior stairs, the potential promise of an oasis on which the theater would have come to rest.

Large black staircases finally split the space. They represent the immense buildings of Dubai, piercing a height in a horizontal landscape. Massive and important, they are visible from the outside and hide the subtlety of the luminous threads that are revealed once one enters, and which symbolize the architectural tracings and sketches, the basis of all construction.
