  • Concept and challenges: Canal Market Hall is the culmination of the redesigned experience of Ottawa International Airport’s food offer. Like the Rideau Canal that connects the City of Ottawa to the City of Kingston, Canal Market Hall is the bridge between Ottawa and the rest of the world. the Humà team which is the designer of the project and the coordinator of the engineers team, worked hand in hand on this project with their client SSP, one of the world's largest travel food operators. Fitting perfectly into the overall formal language of the airport, the market stalls are dressed with wooden slats, identical to the pediments already present on the site. Designed as an open area evoking neighborhood life and its local shops, the space is punctuated by stalls offering a wide choice of fresh, local and made-to-order products. Organic lines define the space and ceiling, while ceramic flooring and different levels of seatingvisually create more or less intimate dining spaces and channel the circulation naturally, allowing for an exploratory experience similar to wandering along the banks of the Rideau Canal. Taking full advantage of the floor to ceiling windows, greenery is inserted on the podium, recalling the different levels offered by the banks of the Rideau Canal.
