  • Concept and challenges: Loft Redpath is a reuse project in two stages takes advantage of the industrial history of the Redpath sugar refinery to provide a renewed domestic and day to day life environment. The first stage consists in Recycling of an industrial benchmark. The old sugar refinery emerges from its ruins to offer a new residential complex comprising 118 loft units. The project preserves the general essence of the buildings that make up the Redpath compound reviving the spirit of the place. The rehabilitation strategy is directly inspired by the organic evolution of the complex and the rigor of its architecture. The heritage value of the grounds cannot be dissociated from that of the Lachine Canal, as it links the project to the evolution of the character of the Saint-Gabriel locks. The second stage is the creation of an architectural vocabulary that fits. The architectural concept enhances the industrial character of the site, avoiding typical residential references. The garden façade is animated with a network of exterior corridors and terraces superimposed on the original building skin of the refinery. An overhead glazed link recalls the old industrial conveyors. An exemplary simplicity is maintained throughout, as different components are expressed with a minimum of materials.
