Concept and challenges: Das Bier is a new 3000 sq. ft. industrial style German "Bierhall" concept bar located in Montreal’s Rosemont neighbourhood. Many challenges were encountered during the renovation of this place. Our mandate was to create a meeting point between European cult for great beers and the neighborhood’s lifestyle as it’s situated in the premises of a former show bar that acted as an institution in the area. Our first intervention was to open the space, composed of three buildings with three different ground floor levels, to create one single large hall. We had to work with two sets of stairs that lead to the tenants above, one of which is positioned in the middle of the space. During the demolition, the removal of some materials exposed original high quality long hidden elements; Layers of history with which we’ve decided to work, such as the terrazzo floors and a stone façade from past renovations.
